How to Shoot Video with a DSLR

What settings to use on a DSLR for Shooting Video

If you’re using a DSLR camera for photos, you may be neglecting its video capabilities. Learn how to put your DSLR to better use and create video content for your brand!

Below is a video from DSLR expert Ray Ortega that will help you sort out your DSLR settings and get your camera ready to shoot great video.

Here’s a cheat sheet of what’s covered:

GET INTO MANUAL MODE FOR FULL CONTROL OVER THE LOOK OF YOUR VIDEO

FPS (Frames Per Second) = the frequency at which consecutive images called frames are displayed in an animated display

– Set the FPS to 24 fps, for a smaller file size but still professional looking footage

Shutter Speed = the length of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into the camera sensor

– Set the Shutter Speed: to 48 (or 50 if you’re using a Canon DSLR)

…Start with these settings and once you have a good grasp and understanding, feel free to change according to what you need to shoot.

CONTROLLING EXPOSURE

(translation: how much light gets into the camera)

High ISO vs Low ISO = controls the sensors sensitivity to light

Aperture = the amount of light that gets into the camera and the best control for exposure. Set to lowest number to let max amount of light in.

DSLR MENU SETTINGS TO SET + FORGET

Picture Profile/Style: neutral or standard

Highlight Tone Priority: disable/off

Auto Lighting Optimizer: set to standard, low or off

And before you press record…

HOW TO GET PROPER FOCUS AND WHITE BALANCE

– Zoom in to make sure your primary subject is in focus and super sharp!

– For white balance, adjust setting to match your lighting conditions (daylight or tungsten will be the main ones, most often used).

These settings will give you a solid start to using your DSLR to shoot great video. 🙂
